Solar lamps

BRIGHT is a Norwegian company that develops electrically powered products that are not dependent on the electrical grid. Their range of solar lamps with charging capabilities are robust, and built for tough conditions. Their products are designed for low total cost of ownership and to create minimum waste.

During the development of SOL (top images), we advised on design choices and production considerations. We have also redesigned parts of the SunBell Smart lamp (bottom image), including the port caps and an integrated compliant power button. In addition to CAD production files, we delivered a CMF (color/material/finish) specifications, and renderings showing the desired color options.

With durability, sustainability and repairability as the main design drivers, we advised on the appropriate material selection and final choice. The polymer parts of the product are as a result exclusively polypropylene. The material works very well for parts that flex, such as living hinges and integrated compliant buttons. In addition, it is easily recycled and can be incinerated for energy.

In this design, we tried to utilize the material to the maximum for simplified production and repair. We developed flexures for the port caps and an integrated, compliant power button. This type of button is completely sealed by design and protects the interior from dust and water.

The SunBell was optimized by transitioning to polypropylene. Redesigning the port caps and introducing an integrated compliant power button improves durability and repairability. The port caps and power button is shown on the bottom picture.
